About this ledger

This site compares the retirement accounts a self-employed person can actually open: Solo 401(k), SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA, Traditional IRA and Roth IRA. Each comparison is a table with prose attached to it.

Tables are drafted by Christopher Smith, Managing Director, then checked line by line against the current IRS limit notices and Publications 560, 590-A and 590-B before they go up. When new figures arrive for a tax year, every row is re-verified and the revision date printed above the matrix changes with it.

We do not sell accounts, hold client money or advise on your personal tax position. The tables exist so you can walk into a conversation with your CPA already holding the right questions.

Standard 04

Editorial standards

Every comparison on this site is written for self-employed readers who need to check the math themselves. The rules below govern how the master matrix, the deadline ledger and each account page are produced.

  1. No provider payments

We do not accept payment from custodians, brokerages or plan administrators for placement, ordering or favourable wording. No account type pays to appear in the master matrix.

  2. No rankings for sale

Row order follows account structure, not commercial deals. Solo 401(k), SEP IRA, Traditional IRA, Roth IRA and SIMPLE IRA always appear in the same sequence with the same columns.

  3. Every figure is footnoted

Contribution limits, income thresholds and filing dates carry a superscript marker that resolves to a public source: IRS notices, retirement plan publications or the statute itself. A number without a source does not get published.

  4. Corrections are published in full

When an error is confirmed, the page is corrected and the change is logged with a date and a short description of what moved. See the corrections log.

  5. Education, not advice

This site explains how the accounts work. It does not recommend a specific account for a specific taxpayer, and it is not tax, legal or investment advice. For a decision on your own return, use the contact route or a licensed professional.

Sources are listed at the foot of each comparison table. Superscript markers are stable, so a footnote number keeps the same meaning wherever the table appears.

Corrections policy

Every figure on this site carries a tax year and a footnote. When one is wrong, this is the route to fix it.

We publish contribution limits, thresholds and deadlines for self-employed retirement accounts. If a number, a citation or a date is wrong, tell us and we will correct it in the open.

How to report an error

Send the page address, the sentence or table cell in question, and the source you are relying on. Email [email protected], or use the contact form if you prefer.

What we fix, and how fast

Correction turnaround by error type
Error type Action we take Turnaround
Limit, threshold or tax year Value corrected, footnote re-dated 2 business days
Deadline or filing date Date corrected, ledger entry re-issued 2 business days
Citation or source link Source replaced or the claim removed 5 business days
Wording or typography Fixed and logged in the corrections log 5 business days
Disputed interpretation Claim flagged as contested, both readings noted 10 business days

What we will not do

  • We do not quietly change a number. Each correction is listed in the corrections log at the foot of the affected page.
  • We do not delete a comparison row to avoid an awkward result. Where an account struggles, that stays on the page next to its strengths.
  • We do not accept edits from an account provider asking to look better in the comparison matrix.

Sourcing and review rules are set out under editorial standards.
